Superbon’s best performances in ONE Championship

Superbon

Legends are not defined by their shortcomings, but rather by how they bounce back from adversity.

Superbon Singha Mawynn may have stumbled, but his story is far from over. In fact, his path to redemption is only just beginning, and all roads lead to ONE Fight Night 11: Eersel vs Menshikov on Prime Video.

On June 9, inside the hallowed grounds of Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, the 31-year-old destroyer makes his first appearance since losing the ONE featherweight kickboxing world title to Chingiz Allazov last January. The entire card will air live in US primetime and free for Prime Video subscribers in North America.

Standing between him and vindication, however, is Tayfun Ozcan, who is also hell-bent on carving his own path to greatness by upsetting the former divisional king.

Before this high-stakes all-striking war at 155 pounds, let’s first relive Superbon’s career-defining moments in ONE Championship.

#3. Settles the score vs. Sitthichai Sitsongpeenong

Given his notorious reputation in the unforgiving Muay Thai circuit, all eyes were on Superbon in his promotional debut at ONE: No Surrender back in 2020.

Apart from getting his feet wet in the largest martial organization in the world, the 32-year-old also got to settle the score with a familiar rival, whom he split his first two encounters with.

His trilogy with Sitthichai Sitsongpeenong was indeed an action-packed affair, showcasing the beauty and technicality of Muay Thai between two tacticians.

Fans were treated to a slugfest between contrasting styles, as Sitthichai’s punch-heavy game clashed against Superbon’s lethal kicking arsenal. However, Superbon got the better of his compatriot, using slick counterattacks and impeccable movement, darting in and out of danger for three rounds.

The Singha Mawynn standout’s underrated defense was also on full display, as he neutralized Sitthichai’s fearsome power using his godlike timing and reflexes.

#2. Gets even with Marat Grigorian

It’s never easy going up against a former foe, especially after being on the receiving end of a shocking 30-second knockout.

Superbon, of course, has experienced his fair share of losses in the past but has always shown the ability to storm back better than ever.

The Thai star was eager to avenge his setback against Marat Grigorian in his first featherweight kickboxing world title defense at ONE X last year.

This time around, Superbon proved he never makes the same mistakes twice, coming up with a brilliant game plan to stifle Grigorian’s daunting forward pressure. From the opening bell up to the final horn, Superbon let his razor-sharp body kicks go, punishing the Armenian-Belgian challenger from a safe distance.

Once Grigorian bridged the distance in the championship rounds, Superbon wisely continued the onslaught using step-in knees and liver punches.

After 15 agonizing minutes, Grigorian’s body was painted red with painful welts, which visibly slowed him down. Superbon retained his massive gold belt with arguably one of his storied career’s most decisive and fulfilling victories.

#1. Shocks the world vs. Giorgio Petrosyan

Superbon’s star power has always been unmatched, but his stock reached the stratosphere when he knocked out arguably one of the greatest kickboxers to ever live.

Following his electric performance vs Sitthichai, Superbon earned himself a shot at the inaugural ONE featherweight kickboxing world title. However, not many gave him a chance against ONE Featherweight Kickboxing World Grand Prix winner Giorgio Petrosyan, who punched his ticket by winning one of the most stacked tournaments in the promotion’s history.

Known as ‘The Doctor’ for his precise yet extremely lethal strikes, Petrosyan took out three former world champions before his date with Superbon at ONE: First Strike in 2021.

The two firecrackers did not disappoint in the first round, trading missile-like kicks and punches. Things, however, took a drastic turn for Petrosyan just seconds into the second round, when his chin felt the wrath of one of the Thai’s deadly high kicks.

The Armenian-Italian great briefly lowered his guard after an exchange, which proved costly against a sniper like Superbon. Petrosyan went stiff upon impact and was clearly out cold on his feet before even hitting the circle mats.

It earned Superbon not only the belt but also the award for ONE’s 2021 Knockout of the Year in kickboxing. That moment has forever been immortalized in the annals of history and continues to be replayed all over the world.
