Clashes along the Iranian-Afghan border on Saturday night resulted in the deaths of at least three individuals and multiple injuries, escalating tensions between the two nations. Iranian state media and Afghan officials reported that two Iranian border guards and one Taliban soldier were killed during the fighting, which lasted for six hours along the southwestern border of Afghanistan. Both countries accused each other of initiating the clashes. The skirmishes occurred against the backdrop of a dispute over water rights, specifically the flow of water from the Helmand River in Afghanistan into eastern Iran, an area affected by drought. Iranian officials accused the Taliban administration of violating a long-standing treaty by restricting the water flow, a claim the Taliban denied. The issue of water has been a longstanding point of contention between Afghanistan and Iran due to their shared reliance on the Helmand River. In recent weeks, tensions have escalated, and Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi warned against violating the 1973 water treaty. The clashes prompted the Afghan Ministry of National Defense to call for a negotiated settlement, emphasizing that war and negative actions serve no party’s interests.
